World Sailing MCS Audit for 49er and 49erFX's

World Sailing MCS Audit for 49er and 49erFX's

In one-design sailing, the goal is simple: every sailor should have the same opportunity on the water, no matter which boat they step into. For Olympic classes like the 49er and 49erFX, that level playing field relies heavily on the precision and consistency of the builder.

To ensure these standards are maintained, World Sailing operates the Manufacturer Certification System (MCS), a programme that monitors the quality and compliance of Olympic sailing equipment.

Last month, Mackay Boats hosted World Sailing auditors, Antonio Saporito (right in photo) and Francesco Gulizzi (left), who undertook a detailed review of our build procedures for the 49er and 49erFX Olympic skiff classes.

What Is the Manufacturer Certification System (MCS)?

The Manufacturer Certification System (MCS) is a World Sailing programme designed to ensure that all Olympic sailing equipment meets clearly defined standards for:

•           Quality control

•           Traceability

•           Design compliance

•           Consistency across licensed manufacturers

Aligned with ISO 9001:2015 principles, the system is built on two core pillars:

1. Manufacturer Audits

Audits assess whether builders consistently produce equipment that meets approved building specifications. This includes reviewing production processes, documentation systems, certification procedures, and traceability protocols.

2. Event Inspections

Equipment inspections at major regattas ensure that boats and components supplied to athletes conform precisely to the class building specifications.

Why the Audit Matters for the 49er and 49erFX

The 49er and 49erFX are strict one-design classes. Athletes compete using identical equipment produced by a limited number of licensed manufacturers. Through the MCS audit process, World Sailing verifies that:

•           Construction methods remain compliant with approved specifications

•           Materials and components meet defined standards

•           Documentation and traceability systems are robust

•           Each boat delivered matches the one-design criteria

Our Ongoing Commitment to Performance and Compliance

The auditors’ visit to Mackay Boats provided an important opportunity to reflect on our ongoing commitment to delivering world-class equipment.

“The programme plays a vital role in competition as it safeguards quality boatbuilding, ensures transparent and fully traceable manufacturing systems, and ultimately gives athletes confidence in the equipment they race,” says Mackay Boats, John Clinton.

The auditors will also begin audits at key events in 2026.
